We live a fast-moving world that gets more fragile as it gets less agile.

The CIA site has been hacked until it went down. The US Senate site has been breached and information plundered and put on display.

PayPal and Facebook accounts have been hacked and passwords put on public display for others to do with as they please.

I can’t help but wonder if Lulz isn’t just getting started. But wait, who is Lulz?

Lulz is a name given to that kind of laugh that you make at someone else’s suffering (or lack of sophistication which results in suffering in these cases). It’s like an American moniker of “schadenfreude” and is the kind of laugh you hear in reaction to someone getting killed who deserved it or thrown in the slammer for life for idiocy or visited upon by some form of horrid misery even when not warranted. It’s not a very nice laugh.

And Lulz Security group is not a nice bunch of hackers: They’re the truest group of anarchists I have seen in my lifetime.

They don’t care about your lack of computer knowledge; they laugh at whatever misfortune you may encounter because of it.

They don’t care about your PayPal account getting raided; they laugh at the thought that it happened because of your own inability to listen to the sound advice given to you to create a strong password and use it.

They don’t care about your privacy being invaded or your emails stolen or Facebook account picture getting changed to something terrifying. My guess is that they are in it for the fun of it because you believe in the illusion of security and the goodness of right and the evil of wrong.

This reminds me of how it is that I came to install one of those motion-sensitive security lights on my front door so that I would be able to see or at least scare off some clown who would grab and shake the knob on my front door in the middle of the night. After I installed it, he (she?) never returned.

We all need to learn and adapt to an ever-changing environment that grows less safe as it grows more sophisticated. Think of how quickly certain foods get recalled when there is an outbreak of some contaminant. Or how people in America scrambled to buy Geiger counters after the Fukushima reactor started spewing radiation after the tsunami. We live a fast-moving world that gets more fragile as it gets less agile.

As far as Lulz is concerned, I, for one, welcome our new overlords. (Just kidding.)

You may not believe this, but I think they are doing all of us a big favor and this why I consider them to be true anarchists. They are not merely pointing out in some nice way that Internet users need to step up their security. They are picking the low hanging fruit and making a food fight out of it.

In my ebook, I give people a very easy way to create a very sophisticated password that takes much more than even the highest-powered GPU to crack quickly (if you don’t know what that means, then you probably missed the news that GPU cards which process a lot of graphics/video throughput are being repurposed to hack passwords and that means even yesteryear’s passwords are not sophisticated enough).

So, let me give this to you in a nutshell:

Your password needs to be at least 12 characters long. Last year it was at least 8.

Your password needs to have a mix of upper-case and lower-case letters, numbers and some special characters like hyphens, underscores, dollar signs, etc.

Your password needs to contain NO NAMES and NO WORDS of any kind.

Your password can be checked for security strength for free at http://www.passwordmeter.com/.

Your password should not be used on more than one site unless that site poses no threat if the password were hacked.

Your password should be easy to remember if you use my method for creating one.

Sign up for my free ebook using the registration tool on the right and go straight to the chapter on how to create one. You can’t afford lax security for your Internet passwords.

We can’t go through life with unlocked footlockers, unlocked front doors and easy-to-hack passwords as there are more people who really don’t care about your privacy and security.

You must remember that the Internet is filled with people who are no less scary than those you would encounter in a dark alley in New York City at 2am. And you WOULD NOT KNOW if they were shaking the knob on your computer’s back door even if it was right now…

If you know what Google AdWords is, then you probably know that they have coupons or maybe you’ve got one in the mail or been offered one, but didn’t know what to do next.

Let’s say that you are a really great _______(fill in the blank with your profession) and you have no interest in marketing or using a computer to design ads, place them strategically, make the perfect landing page and outbid others in doing the same thing. Well, most _______s don’t know how to do this because it’s a completely unrelated discipline to doing what _______s do. Even if you were to get a degree in Business Management, they don’t teach this stuff because it changes so quickly that by the time the class is over, a whole new chapter would need to be written in the textbook.

But, there are people who know a lot about technology, software and marketing and also coaching and training. This person would be able to do the work for you and then teach you how to do it yourself. That’s MeshMarketer. We will do it for you. I’ve done it with fantastic success in saving lots of money for other companies when they were spending too much and also helping them to increase their overall traffic to their site. References available upon request.

So, if you’ve ever thought about starting up with Google AdWords to reach new customers, this is a great way to do it. However, I do feel it’s important to warn you in advance that the coupon may be $100, but you often need to spend up to $200 altogether to really get a fair sense of how your campaign actually works and whether or not it’s a good idea to continue with it. Also, it’s never a good practice to think you need to be at the top of paid search; it only means that you outbid everyone else. When you are able to pay a low cost per click, have a Quality Score of 10 AND be at the top, then you know you are doing it right and it’s then great to enjoy the space at the top; unless you are the only provider of a product or service, you can expect to pay your way to the top unless you are smart and simply work on being between #2 and #3 and focusing on your Quality Score (7 is just fine; 8 and 9 rarely exist).

As you can tell, there’s probably much more to this than you know. You can read my ebook (for free if you subscribe to my mailing list) and learn all that there is to know and then from there you can hire me to do the work to get you started.

You can get started by reaching me at joseph@meshmarketer.com.

I then had to think HOW are they monkeying with my browser?

The answer is simple: I have a ton of OLD apps in Facebook that I don't use.

My Facebook started acting very weird a couple weeks ago and I made a comment about it. No one else seemed to feel the same way as me, so I decided to put my thinking cap on and figure out what to do.

I started to also notice that my web browser (which is one of the most secure) was acting funny when Facebook was open.

So, I thought to myself that if my browser is hacked that I need to eliminate the access from the hacker. I then had to think HOW are they monkeying with my browser?

The answer is simple: I have a ton of OLD apps in Facebook that I don’t use. And, quite simply, who is to say that a hacker hasn’t purchased one of these apps to use themselves or perhaps that app has been compromised because it may be in disrepair?

So, here’s how to clean out apps that you don’t use in Facebook.

First, go to your upper-right-hand corner of your Facebook account and click on Account and then click the dropdown option that says Privacy Settings. You’ll see a screen like this one:

As you can guess, your next step is to click where it says CLICK HERE in the graphic. This will take you to your apps settings.

You’ll next see a screen like this one:

And, again, where it says REMOVE, you will CLICK HERE as the graphic above states.

Then you will be taken to the list of apps that are active in your Facebook. These have access to not just your profile, but also to Facebook programming which means that if Facebook CAN be hacked, THIS is the doorway for someone to go through to do it.

The next screen you will see looks like this:

You should remove ALL apps that you do not recognize or do not want. If you see one that isn’t clear as to what it is, that will make it all the more suspect. Get rid of it. For each time that you click the X button where it says CLICK HERE, you will need to click two more buttons to approve the deletion.

Restart your browser and you should be good to go!

I've noticed it here and there for a little while now, but I'm starting to see more and more that YouTube videos are showing up in Google Searches (also called organic search results).

I’ve noticed it here and there for a little while now, but I’m starting to see more and more that YouTube videos are showing up in Google Searches (also called organic search results).

What is probably the most interesting part of this phenomenon is whether or not a YouTube video may reach the top of a Google Search.

Is Google doing this to leverage YouTube? After all, if a website is what you expect to see when you type in a Google Search, then how can a VIDEO replace a website? And if a website isn’t what Google is providing you with when you type a search and it’s a page they are returning to you, then shouldn’t these results also show up in Yahoo! and Bing?

Whatever the answers to these interesting questions are, it’s time to leverage this more prevalent capability. I plan to make a video a week doing something related to my sites.

I promise you that I will become a vlogger and I will be vodcasting once a week.

Mind you, I have three sites that I plan to be posting to. One of them isn’t even purchased as a domain yet, but I plan to buy the domain name this week and start posting.

The first site is this one. There are TONS of material to post about Internet Marketing and Social Media and I plan to make a video each week or at least three times a month. The cumulative effect is worth it.

The second site is my workoutrecipes.com site. I’ve now lost 44 pounds since I started working out with P90X and eating far better and I really need to keep adding to my blog there.

The other one is coming as I said, but it has to do with video editing.

PS: It’s amazing how my life has given me the opportunity to have editing skills, writing skills and generally the kind of skills that make for a life of a blogger, so now I really need to not just help my clients blog and turn profits, but I really need to do that and I have started raising my rates as a result of my full schedule. Any good business owner knows that if you are charging X amount of dollars for work and your time gets filled charging X amount of dollars, then it’s time to start charging a rate higher than X such as 110% of X or 120% of X or even 150% of X or 200% of X. I’m at that point. One thing I haven’t done is start pricing my competitors and find out if I am charging too little. I’ll be posting more on that as I continue to blog…this will end up being part of a video that I make because I want to talk about my competitors but I don’t want to mention them in text so video will do the trick perfectly. This blog post came about because I was doing research on my competitors and found they had a really crappy video (and I do mean REALLY CRAPPY video) of their business and it was in the top 10 of organic search results! This means I am behind the curve! This is my incentive to get cracking.

Hosting a website is either free with no-frills, costs between $100-$200 per year to pretty much do-it-yourself, costs thousands per year to go first class or if you use MeshMarketer, it's only $199 per year to go first class.

Hosting a website is either:

Free (on something like blogger.com, wordpress.com or other free blog site which can provide basic functionality such as buttons for visitors to buy things)

Costs between $100-$200 per year (if you host your site on a commercial webhost which will NOT do the following: advise you, do work for you, and help you turn a profit, etc.) or

Costs thousands per year (if you pay a website developer or an agency to do the hosting as well as advise you, do work for you, and help you turn a profit, etc. but you get first class service for the money) or

If you use MeshMarketer, it’s only $199 per year (and I will advise you, do work for you, and help you turn a profit and you’ll get that first class service that typically costs ten times more).

If you go the first route (the free route), then you are going to have to rely on the motivations of the free service to help you. In other words, as long as they can make money off you, then they are happy. Many times, they will not let you change the design of a site, use any custom software, scripting or programming which they do not provide and often times, generally frown upon allowing you to make money. This is not always the case, but it is most of the time. They figure if they can’t make money from you then you should not be able to make money from them.

If you go the second route (and spend about $100-$200 per year), you can expect a pretty steep learning curve and if you don’t have patience for breakdowns, things not working as advertised or expected, viruses, spam, and a narrow focus which results in a loss of the big picture, then you are in for a pretty rough ride. There are lots of books that teach how to build and fix things but rarely will any of them also teach wisdom, experience and the brutally-honest truth: It’s rare that anyone will help you unless you join a community where that kind of help is expected. Often times, finding such a community often happens after the point where most people quit at trying to make blogging or hosting a website a reality on their own.

If you go the website designer route or agency route, just remember that after charging you thousands for setup, they will often charge you hundreds to make tiny changes. They are often only interested in you succeeding far enough to pay them their bill. It will take some time before you can expect to turn a profit and you can expect them to want to you to stay with them forever. It’s like the psychologist who will schedule your appointments until the end of time because without you they might actually have to heal people and get good recommendations.

If you go with MeshMarketer, you can expect me to train you how to do what I do. I’ve got years of training experience and I’m quite good at it. I don’t charge a set-up fee to get you started. I’ll set you up with a blog based on a free and attractive design (that you choose), connect it up to social media so that when you post on your blog it will automatically post on Facebook, Twitter, etc.. If anything breaks, I will fix it within 24 hours. If you’ve read this far, thank you. Let’s get started. Call me at 805.742.4631.

But if you really want to know more detail first, take a look at this comparison:

MeshMarketer offers the following for $199/year (no set-up fees, either)
(Save THOUSANDS)—

Webhosting, Email, and Free Training To Do It Yourself

Free Website Design That YOU Choose

WordPress Blog With SEO and other Paid Plugins

Automated Posting From Blog to Twitter, Facebook, etc.

24-Hour Break/Fix Guarantee

Is that expensive? Let’s take a look…

Webhosting, Email, and Free Training To Do It Yourself
(Savings: Maybe $50 Depending)

First, there is just plain old vanilla webhosting which you can get at some places such as FatCow (which I no longer recommend) and BlueHost (which I DO recommend) and these (depending on your ability to do research and find the right coupons and special offers) can cost somewhere between under $70/year or as much as $99/year. And if you were to go with MediaTemple, then you would be paying $20/month or $240/year. Is MeshMarketer the most expensive? No. Is it the least expensive? No. There are others out there, but in terms of personal experience, range of prices and levels of service, these three represent the majority of webhosts regarding price, product and service.

Do you already have a website ready to go? Do you know how to get the files onto the server? If the answer to either of these questions is no, then you’re not going to get any help (except maybe some instructions) from any of these parties. You might need someone who can help you with this at no additional cost. Someone like MeshMarketer perhaps? Yes, it’s true. If you don’t have a site ready to go or if you do already but don’t know how to get it onto a new server, then MeshMarketer provides this to you with the flat rate of $199/year.

Many of these webhosts will also include email accounts, so these are a given. They don’t cost you extra so it doesn’t really figure into this.

And how many companies will actually train you to do this all yourself? I will!

Free Website Design That YOU Choose
(Savings: Thousands and Hundreds for Even Small Changes)

Do you know how much it costs to design a website from scratch and also make changes to it? The answer is that it’s typically big bucks. I do mean thousands of dollars to build and hundreds of dollars to make changes. That’s just insane.

The beauty of computers is that once the work is done that it is reproducable. Just copy and paste, right?

With WordPress, hundreds of WordPress designers build lots of great themes every day. Some cost money but others are free. These free designs are easily found and easily changed once installed. If you decide after a month that you don’t like the design, just change it. This blog has gone through several iterations of design and all of them were major and took about five minutes to change…for free…

The same goes for you. If you want to choose a free webdesign and use it, then it doesn’t cost a thing and it’s easy to implement.

One of my customers was paying their website designer $300 every time that there was a change they needed done. I’m not saying that there aren’t site designers that are worth that kind of money, but really… Just one change for $300??

And by the way, you won’t be getting ANY help on this from FatCow, BlueHost or MediaTemple.

WordPress Blog with SEO plugins
(Savings: Thousands or Hundreds Each Month)

WordPress is the number one blogging platform in the world. If you don’t have a blog, then you are at that point about 15 years ago when companies were scratching their heads as to whether or not they should get a website and we all know what they chose to do. Websites became the platform for the Internet revolution and blogs are the hub of any business or personal social media presence which is a revolution happening…right…now. With phenomenons like Twitter and Facebook embedding themselves in our lives, who knows what will be new in four years or five years that will rely on having a hub for social media? There are already some social media sites that pretend to be blogs and Twitter is a micro-blog platform. The next big thing is leveraging blogs into community sites for your customers and that is taking shape…right…now.

But you could just get a WordPress blog for free, right? Yes, there are several successful authors and pundits who use reliable platforms such as the free version of WordPress or Blogger (which is Google’s free blogging platform) and others, but WordPress as a self-hosted blog enables you to do many things that the free version of blogging will never do. If you want to seriously monetize your site (make money from it) or get away from those bland templates or connect up to social media networks like Twitter and Facebook, then you need your own blog.

This is where MeshMarketer comes in and provides you with years of experience setting up your blog as part of the plan, but also providing plugins which will provide a powerful SEO experience (SEO is Search-Engine Optimization which is most useful for making sure that when someone searches for you on Google or other search engines that they find you based on your content). There are also many other plugins which do many things such as allow you to integrate with Twitter so that when you Tweet or post then this information is found on both platforms. These plugins are all free and part of the service.

And don’t forget that you could pay an SEO professional to do what this plugin does. Cost? Quite possibly thousands or hundreds of dollars to do the same thing just once. Just a cursory search of SEO professionals on Google yields $500/month offerings? How long will you pay $500/month? What about your new content? Well, maybe hundreds more?

You do need to shop for a webhost carefully because not all webhosts have what’s called a one-click installation. FatCow, BlueHost and MediaTemple do have what they call a one-click install, but none of them are self-explanatory or user friendly. In other words, you really need someone like MeshMarketer to know things like the difference between www.meshmarketer.com and meshmarketer.com and why the difference matters.

Automated posting to Twitter, Facebook, etc.
(Savings: Thousands)

One of the most awesome things about this value is you get a BOPE included. What’s a BOPE? BOPE is an acronym for Blog-Once-Publish-Everywhere. This means that once you post on your blog, it will publish the article everywhere including Twitter (with a short link back to your blog), on Facebook (properly formatted with the title and pictures in the right places) and LinkedIn and so on.

Will you find this anywhere else? Heck no. MeshMarketer.com is the only place that offers this service as part of webhosting.

I honestly don’t know how much you would have to pay someone to do this kind of work for you, but it takes me about five hours to get it set up. And since I’m so experienced with this, I can tell you that if you don’t choose the right services, it won’t work right. I’ve tried several different ones only to find out the hard way.

24-Hour Break/Fix Guarantee
(Savings: Peace of Mind…What is that worth to you?)

Let’s say that you website stops working. Or your blog. Who will fix it? How much will it cost? Don’t you want a professional on call to fix it? That’s MeshMarketer.

I set up an automated weekly backup so that if something goes dreadfully wrong with your website, you will have a backup.

I’m easily reachable by email or phone. I do prefer email by the way and I prefer not to take calls after 9pm unless absolutely necessary. But if something is broken, reach out and I’ll let you know how soon it will be fixed.

If you're going to build it, they will come...but they won't stay if they aren't entertained or informed.

After you have established your most essential channels of communication in Internet Marketing, whether it’s email marketing, Twitter, Facebook (groups and business pages or just your personal profile), YouTube video channel, pay-per-click ads with opt-in newsletters and all the other unforeseen ways of providing “content” to your audience of followers, friends, fans or subscribers, what do you say?

Imagine that the Internet is a really big nightclub and everybody who is in your audience is sitting there with their drinks in hand and the spotlight comes on to the mike on stage and you walk up and…WHAT DO YOU SAY?

This is probably the most crucial question you can ask yourself (probably before you even get started), but most people who want a Twitter account or want to drive their customers to the website or just make more sales using the Internet are more concerned with how they look than what they will say.

This is exactly the problem faced by 24-hour news channels when they got started. They had the capacity to provide wall-to-wall news, but what to fill it with? This dilemma was detailed in a very insightful book by Fark.com’s Drew Curtis called It’s Not News It’s Fark: How Mass Media Tries to Pass Off Crap as News. Now that we have these ways of delivering content, WHAT DO WE SAY? Of course, when big news breaks (like on September 11, 2001), it’s easy to just show the same traumatizing clips of death and destruction over and over, but what about when there is no news? What do you say then?

If you’re going to build it, they will come…but they won’t stay if they aren’t entertained or informed. Keeping those eyes on your content is going to be tough if there isn’t enough of it. I find it to be very challenging and I consider myself an expert.

Now sometimes this means that you must resort to repeating the content of others. It’s not ideal, but it works. This is why news aggregators are so popular (such as Fark.com, Huffington Post and others). They may or may not have original content, but the ones that have something going for it besides aggregation alone tend to do much better than without. But a word of warning: You will turn a lot of people off if you are repeating innuendo, scandal or otherwise junk news. While this is a strategy that some use frequently, it’s only going to cater to the lowest common denominator and will just dilute the value of what you have to offer (unless what you have to offer is purely fluff and gossip).

I myself use RSS feeds as a way of providing some content on my Facebook and Twitter accounts (but not for my blog). I make it super-easy by using Google Reader and clicking the Share button which puts that article in queue for my RSS feeds which is automatically picked up by my Facebook and Twitter via ping.fm. I think that for my blog that I would only write an article around content from somewhere else rather than just forwarding it (also called “retweeting” on Twitter and “sharing” elsewhere).

The answer to “What Do You Say?” is really the difference between make or break. Hopefully by providing insightful content such as this article, I will develop a reputation for providing something useful.

I really want to provide value to my customers and if my customers aren’t ready for it, then I will ask them to find someone else to work with.

Here’s a case in point: Recently I had a customer who told me that the free template I found them didn’t look first class and so they didn’t want to use it. This was a deal-breaker for them and so I told them that they needed to focus less on that and more on their content such as their awesome video of their product (that I made from their less-than-ideal footage). I had smartly and prominently featured this video in their awesome template that they didn’t like. They didn’t listen to me and so I recommended they find someone else to figure out their “first class website” issues. I took that template to my next customer who loved it so much that they are recommending me and my services on their next newsletter that’s going out to thousands of their clients. So guess which customer is the successful one? The successful one is the one who has the newsletter and is focused primarily on what to say rather than primarily on how they look while the one focused on how they don’t look first class is still in a business incubator after four years.

So when you start putting together a social media strategy or an Internet Marketing campaign, it’s great to focus on what it will look like and that it’s working properly, but THEN WHAT? What will you be saying? How often? Will you author it yourself? Will you aggregate? Will you go for weeks without saying nothing? What is your plan?

Having a vehicle for your message without knowing what the message will be and how often it will be sent is like having a shiny new car with no gas.

Part 4 of 4 Interview with Jayne Hitchcock, Co-Founder of Working to Halt Online Abuse (WHO@) at http://haltabuse.org

In 1990, I met Chris and Jayne Hitchcock and, through the reach of the Internet, was able to reconnect with Jayne and found that she had become an Internet professional working to, as the non-profit she co-founded states, halt online abuse. As she was the target of a particularly deranged individual when there were very few laws to prevent online abuse, she has become a well-known subject matter expert and national speaker. Jayne can be reached through http://haltabuse.org also known as WHO@.

I asked Jayne if she’d be interested in letting me ask her 20 questions for my blog and she agreed. Here is part four of four posts which will be published on Mondays this January.

16. If parents are concerned that their kids are doing something illegal online or if they are in trouble, what should they do about it?

Put a stop to it or quite honestly, turn them in to the police. Kids need to learn a lesson and if it means going to jail for a night, so be it.

17. Should kids and teens be required to give their passwords to their parents?

Yes! As long as they are under their parent’s roof, that’s a must.

18. Can parents hack their kids passwords legally or will they go to jail protecting their kids?

It’s hard to “hack” anyone’s password, but they can install filtering/monitoring software that allows them to see what their kids are doing online without a password. pcpandora.com is one program that is powerful and will email you screenshots, logs, etc.

19. Should parents become Amish if they are too freaked out about their kids using the Internet and move themselves and their kids to Ohio?

Move into a cave! But seriously, the internet is not going away. Parents need to learn how to deal with it. Period.

20. Should we do this again next January?

Sure!

11. If you could get teenagers to follow one piece of advice about cyberbullying, what would it be and why?

We call it the three R’s – Recognize cyberbullying; Refuse it – whether it’s happening to you or someone else – step up and say “STOP!”; Report it to someone – a teacher, school resource officer, someone else at school, a parent or other adult, report it anonymously to schooltipline.com (and if your school isn’t on the list, talk to someone at school about adding your school to the site), go to haltabusektd.org and either tell Phoebe The Cyber Crime Dog about it (phoebe@haltabuse.org), tell Uncle Jim Mayer about it (unclejim@haltabuse.org) or click on Need Help? and we’ll help you anonymously and for free.

12. If you could get teenagers to follow one piece of advice about cyberstalking, what would it be and why?

Don’t ignore it and hope it will go away. If the bully is attacking you, they will attack someone else.

13. If you could give online bullies a piece of your mind and let them have it, what would you say?

Stop being a coward and picking on others. Get a life.

14. With all the prevalence of smart phones and digital photo sharing, it’s obvious that teenagers shouldn’t take nude or risqué pictures of themselves, so what other things shouldn’t teens do with camera phones?

They should NOT forward sexts or risque photos or send texts they’ll later regret (always read what you typed before sending and make sure it’s really what you want to say) and be careful of what apps you download. Some are very sneaky about adding charges to the monthly phone bill.

15. Are there safe social media networks that you can recommend for kids and teens to use?

There is no completely safe one, unfortunately. Everyone, of any age, just needs to be careful and not so trusting online. Don’t make a person a friend unless you really and truly know them.

The number one most-requested holiday gift according to the National Retailer Federation is gift cards. Are you selling the most-requested gift?

Take a look at these ten ways that gift cards make money for businesses and see which ones are likely to make your business money in the new year:

The number one most-requested holiday gift according to the National Retailer Federation is gift cards. And it’s not just for the holiday season either because there are birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions where someone might gift someone else a prepaid dinner, gadget, service or product. It’s the best way to buy a gift for someone you don’t know well enough. You can expect people to buy just for this reason alone and that means future business for you.

Floatage is another way you make money and it’s pretty simple. Someone buys a card and they never use it. For a $100 gift card, that’s 99% profit. In 2009, according to a CNBC report, gift card sales totaled $70 billion and $5 billion is still not cashed in because they are either lost or sitting in a kitchen drawer.

Breakage is another way and it simply means that 5-10% of gift cards never get completely used according to the Wall Street Journal which in turn means more free money for you. So think about how much money you can sell each year in gift cards and multiply by 7.5% and that could be pure profit for you.

The other way that gift cards make you money is from new customers. What is your cost for acquiring a new customer? Well, with gift cards, your existing customers are creating new customers for you by giving away your gift cards to customers who have never heard of you or just haven’t done business with you yet!

Have you ever issued a refund for someone and felt uncomfortable asking them to take an in-store credit? Most people don’t like to take the in-store credit but for some reasons, they really don’t mind a gift card as a refund. Well, when you give them a gift card instead of a refund, it forces them to use that money on another product or service you offer instead of that money walking out of the front door of your business.

A $50 gift card almost always means a purchase of over $50. A $100 gift card almost always means a purchase of over $100. Think about it. How many times do your customers actually purchase something equal to the purchase price of a gift card? When I say that it’s almost always more, I really mean that it really is always more but there may be exceptions I guess.

If someone doesn’t use up their entire balance on a gift card, then guess what? They’ll be back to the store again! Repeat trips mean more business for you!

Gift cards are the best form of compensation for rewards and “frequent” customer programs. You already know that what people most want for a holiday gift is a gift card, so what kind of reward do you think your customers most want? Yes, the kind that they can use themselves or that they can re-gift. Everyone wins! Gift cards are practically designed for loyalty programs!

$10 gift cards are an excellent replacement for a $10 coupon program. A gift card sent out to your existing customer base as part of a referral initiative costs you just less than a dollar for each card. Compare this to sending out coupons in the mail to the general public and you’ll see that by using these cards as a referral, you’ll get new customers exactly the way that coupons are meant to, but it will come with a personal referral. Which will be more successful?

Have you ever had a customer try to haggle with you and say, “Well, if I buy all this, then can you give me a cash discount?” It happens a lot in furniture stores and car dealerships, right? Well, if it’s ever happened to you in your business, it’s a leverage point on the part of the customer…but it becomes a leverage point for you when you tell them, “OK. I’ll throw in a gift card.” The gift card costs you nothing, but they feel they have sweetened the deal for them and when they come back, again, they always buy more than the card or they will give it to someone else as a gift, but either way, you have made them happy and you have more business coming.

How many of these apply to you?

Maybe not all seven, but if you do a little math for a moment and think about how much money gift cards can make in one month. Do you ever have customers who ask you if you sell gift cards? How much do you think they would buy each month? What’s 8% of that amount? How many new customers do you think it will bring you and how much do you save by not having to pay for that new customer in advertising? How much do you save on not having to give cash discounts or by converting a return purchase into a gift card instead?

How much do you think that will bring you? Maybe $500 a month? Maybe $1,000? Do you have a figure in your head? OK, now multiply that times 12 months in a year and what do you get?

If you’re interested in getting a gift card program going for your business or if you have any questions, call me at 805.742.4631 and I can show you how to get one in place!
